Hardware is a general term for the physical part of a computer: its technical parts which can be touched, taken apart, broken etc.
Hardware itself is unusable without software. Only with software the hardware serves to its purpose.
Speaking about a personal computer, the hardware is most often represented by a monitor, a keyboard, a mouse and a computer case (containing motherboard, memory, hard-drive, power source, DVD drive etc.). This equally applies to servers and other computer equipment.
