Firewall

by Mira Vlach on January 13, 2008:

Firewall is a computer program for computer protection that works on the principle of filtering incoming and outgoing communication. Its function is important for computers that are part of a network – especially if there is a risk of communication with untrustworthy computers (e.g. Internet)

Alternatively, it can also be a hardware device shielding the whole network or its part. However, in that case it might not be able to protect the stations in network from wireless communication by-passing the firewall.

The rules by which firewall filters the communication are usually set by the network administrator.

Together with anti-virus and anti-spyware, firewall represents a basic means of personal computer protection that is connected to the Internet.
